Key findings of the Roads for Polder Water Management in Bangladesh

This past November, two validation workshops took place in Bangladesh to present, discuss and validate the key findings of Roads to the Rescue project. The first workshop, 9th of November in Khulna, local representatives (BWDB, UP, WMA, farmers and teachers) highlighted as main issues in Polder 32 (Dacope Upazila): more gated culverts are needed and include the flood shelter function in the embankment design. Second workshop, 15th of November in Khajuriya (Barisal District), local representatives (LGED, UP and WMA) discussed as main issues of a small LGED polder: the poor state of embankments and roads, insufficient budget and human capacity, insufficient culverts and sluices. Therefore, common solutions for both polders are: increase number and capacity of water crossing structures, improve the design of (road) embankments, build new embankments and canal dredging.
