Road infrastructure in support of water
management and climate resilience
This section discusses the beneficial use of roads for water management. Roads and water are currently seen as enemies, with water responsible for most of the damage to roads and roads being a major cause of erosion, waterlogging, flooding and dust storms. This, however, can be turned around. This section explains how with improved governance and with the use of a range of techniques, roads can be made into instruments for water management. Taking into consideration the global investment in roads, estimated at USD1-2 Trillion a year to which the recurrent costs of maintenance should be added, developing such green roads for multiple benefits can be a major transformative change to achieve climate resilience.
