Road construction in mountainous areas poses significant risks to vital spring water resources and the long-term stability of road infrastructure. When springs are disturbed during construction—without proper hydrological assessments and techniques—they can shift course, dry up, or even cause road damage. To address these issues, integrating spring preservation into road development is essential.
The Roadside Spring Protection (RoSPro) Project, a collaboration between MetaMeta, FutureWater, and ICIMOD, focuses on protecting springs along roadsides to enhance water security in Dhankuta Municipality and Chhathar Jorpati Rural Municipality.
Using co-design and participatory approaches with local stakeholders and communities, the project implements interventions at two critical levels:
- Roadside spring outlets, where springs interact directly with roads.
- Recharge areas of roadside springs, to secure both water resources and sustainable road infrastructure.
To ensure community involvement at every project stage—from design to implementation—we have also established spring user committees.
